Viewed through a historic lens the Cape Overberg region was the homeland of the Chainoukwa Khoi-san peoples, since time immemorial, by default it was also the first inaccessible frontier of the Dutch colony in the 17th Century. Here, what we now know of this landscape, as the Renosterveld and Coastal Strandveld and Forests, was the habitat of migrating Elephant and Buffalo and home to the Black Rhino and Hippo, to mention a few of Africa’s big game. They were found in abundance in the wetlands and estuary systems on the Agulhas plains and threading the mountain chains in this the Southern most tip of Africa . The Bontebok, Eland, Mountain Zebra, Quagga and Springbok were also seen in their thousands in this hinterland of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. The Bloubok’s special niche was also secure, momentarily.

The Southern tip of Africa (including its marine component) still has the highest biodiversity of plant, fish and mammal species recorded in the whole of Africa (and more so before the collision of European cultures) It is no longer found in such abundance, God forgive us, but what you will find is a landscape still begging for its return. A landscape of dramatic unsurpassed beauty, where the profound drama of evolution is seen etched on the faces of its inhabitants, and on the mountain slopes which witnessed its once prolific abundance.
